이제 벌써 밀발의 향기가 더 익숙하게 다가 온다.
어렸을 적 메뚜기 이리저리 바삐 날으던 논둑길을 걸으며 맡을 수 있었던 생명의 향기..
그 황금 물결 가득했던 추수철 논둑길 대신..
이제 끝없이 펼쳐진 이곳 대초원에서 밀 향기가 대신한다.

감사해오는 마음.. 따스해져 오는 마음..
그리고 그 생명의 밀알들로 하루 하루를 힘차게 살아가는 수많은 사람들이
연녹색 황금들판의 이미지와 함께 한다.

찬란한 햇살아래 저물어 가는 새해 첫날 오후..

눈으로 가득찬 대평원에는 장쾌한 바람이 불고 있었고..
바로 이 눈(雪)을 생명의 자양분으로 삼고,
바로 이 바람(風)으로 세 확장의 도구로 삼았던 푸른 生命들은
소박하지만 늠름한 모습으로 제 있을 곳을 이미 선언하고 있었다.

보잘것 없어 보이는 저 풀뿌리들.. 이파리들..
그저 잡초로 불리며 지나는 동물들 역시 눈길조차 주지 않을 것 같은 저 질박한 생명들..
이 긴긴 凍土의 겨울을 잘도 버틴다.

난.. 이들을 사진에 담아보려 시도했던
십분 정도라는 지극히 찰나적 시간 조차 견디지 못하고
서너겹씩 껴입은 재킷을 추스리며 서둘러 히터가 엔진 소리 만큼 크게 틀어진
따뜻한 차안으로 들어올 수 밖에 없었다.

As the rate of wooden grain elevator de-commissioning and demolition accelerated in Saskatchewan during the 1990s, public attention came to focus increasingly on the dwindling number of these unique structures. Elevator closures and rail line abandonment became inextricably linked to questions of economic viability in many of Saskatchewan’s small communities. 
Rural residents in particular became more and more uneasy as these long-familiar landmarks - country elevators - began to disappear at an accelerating rate. The number of active elevators at this time (supplemented with some inactive ones known to still exist) was approximately 800.
