찬란한 햇살아래 저물어 가는 새해 첫날 오후..

눈으로 가득찬 대평원에는 장쾌한 바람이 불고 있었고..
바로 이 눈(雪)을 생명의 자양분으로 삼고,
바로 이 바람(風)으로 세 확장의 도구로 삼았던 푸른 生命들은
소박하지만 늠름한 모습으로 제 있을 곳을 이미 선언하고 있었다.

보잘것 없어 보이는 저 풀뿌리들.. 이파리들..
그저 잡초로 불리며 지나는 동물들 역시 눈길조차 주지 않을 것 같은 저 질박한 생명들..
이 긴긴 凍土의 겨울을 잘도 버틴다.

난.. 이들을 사진에 담아보려 시도했던
십분 정도라는 지극히 찰나적 시간 조차 견디지 못하고
서너겹씩 껴입은 재킷을 추스리며 서둘러 히터가 엔진 소리 만큼 크게 틀어진
따뜻한 차안으로 들어올 수 밖에 없었다.

As the rate of wooden grain elevator de-commissioning and demolition accelerated in Saskatchewan during the 1990s, public attention came to focus increasingly on the dwindling number of these unique structures. Elevator closures and rail line abandonment became inextricably linked to questions of economic viability in many of Saskatchewan’s small communities.
Rural residents in particular became more and more uneasy as these long-familiar landmarks - country elevators - began to disappear at an accelerating rate. The number of active elevators at this time (supplemented with some inactive ones known to still exist) was approximately 800.

겨울을 맞아 잎을 다 떨어뜨린 나목이지만

일출의 붉고 노란 빛들이 잔가지들에 걸려 마치 단풍이 든 나무처럼 아름답게 변했습니다.

수학적 필터는 이미지 내의 처리 대상 픽셀의 값을 주변을 둘러싼 픽셀들과 비교,
여러 수학적 연산을 해내며 독특한 결과를 이끌어 내는 소프트웨어적 도구를 말합니다.

왕년에 제가 이미지 프로세싱 쪽에서 일할 때, 요즈음의 포토 샵 같은 시스템을 개발 하곤 했었데요,

즉, 주변 픽셀과의 기울기(gradient) 등을 계산하여 외곽선(contour)등을 추출해 내거나,

적외선의 이미지의 경우, 밝기에 고저에 따라, 생물체 유무를 알아내거나,

랜덤한 노이즈를 제거하기 위해 가우시안 분포의 필터를 적용하거나..

얼마만한 크기의 영역의 평균값으로 해당 픽셀 값을 변화시켜 뭉게지는 효과를 낸다거나,

픽셀의 주변을 분석함으로써 수없이 많은 효과를 낼 수 있는 것입니다.

위 사진들도 그러한 효과를 내 본 것인데,

일출 장면의 사진에서 붉고 노란색의 빛들이 나무 가지들의 실루엣에 걸쳐져
다소 예술적 색감이 나오게 된 것입니다.

이러한 것들은 포토샵등의 그래픽 툴에 의해 다양하게 적용되고 있습니다.

또한 요즈음 새롭게 출시되는 DSLR 의 경우, 이러한 다양한 그래픽 모드들 지원함으로써

그래픽 툴등의 후처리(Post-processing) 없이 바로 이러한 효과가 나는 사진들을 찍게 합니다.

Image Processing 된 위 사진들의 원래의 사진들은 아래 것들 입니다. ㅎ

우리는 우리가 세상을 볼수 있는 능력 많큼 세상을 봅니다.

잘 알고 계시는 소위 가시광선의 영역인데요..
인간이 시각적으로 감지할 수 있는 영역 내의 주파수를 가진 빛인 빨주노초파남보의
무지개 색 빛깔들을 우리는 알아챌 수 있는 것이지요.

하지만 다른 동물들은 세상을 우리 인간과 다르게 보는 경우가 많습니다.
생존적 필요에 따라, 굳이 이러한 아름다운 무지개 빛깔을 다 구분할 필요가 없는 경우에는
그저 흑과 백 그리고 중간의 회색 영역으로 구분하는 경우도 있고,
먹이나 포식자의 움직임 그 자체가 생존에 직결되어 있는 경우,
고정된 빛 보다는, 시간에 따르는 빛의 움직임,
즉 속도에 민감한 시각을 가진 경우도 있습니다.

또, 살아있는 생물에 대한 정보가 매우 중요한 경우에 있어서,
어떤 동물들은 체온과 온도가 없는 주변과의 차이를 구분하여, 먹이를 구별해 내는 데요,
이때는 소위 붉은 색보다 더 긴 파장인 적외선을 볼 수 있는 시각적 능력이 있는 거지요..

그렇다면, 누군가 이렇게 사물의 외곽선만 볼 수 있는 능력을 가졌다면

세상이 더 아름답게 보이는 걸까요.. ㅎ

Wind-chiill temperature was below -28 Celsius
when I just drove down to the middle of the Prairie.

Those were a couple of trees over the horizon which caught my sight.
As I kept watching them for a while
I couldn't feel any loneliness nor bleakness..
though they were there in the middle of the vast wilderness.

They were just standing still and undauntedly..

체감 온도 영하 28도..
눈내린 겨울 들판이 보고 싶어 잠시 드라이브에 나섰습니다.

가장 먼저 제 눈을 사로잡은 것은
지평선 위에 늠름하게 서 있는 나무 두어 그루 였습니다.

전혀 고독하거나 황량하게 느껴지지 않았지요.
아주 의연하고 씩씩한 모습이었습니다.

모진 바람과 모든것이 얼어붙는 극심한 상황속에서
나무는 가지를 활짝 펼친채 말없이 이겨내고 있었습니다.

나무를 보면서 생각했습니다.
내년 봄에 나올 찬란한 새싹과 여름 내내 풍성할 그 아름다운 잎새들을..

Vivaldi..Four Seasons : Winter

나무를 보면 항상프랙탈 패턴(fractal pattern)이 떠오릅니다.
우주적 디자인 이라고나 할까요.

수정이나 눈 송이등의 미시적 세계에서부터
해안선의 모양이나, 구름.. 혹은 이러한 나무들의 가지가 분할되어 나가는 것등
시간의 흐름에 따라 일견 무작위적으로(randomly) 진행되어 가는 듯한 자연의 모습이
사실은 수학적으로 잘 정의될 수 있는 단순 기하학적 형태의 끊임없는 반복을 이룹니다..

언제까지나 저렇게 뒹굴고 있으면서
결국 화석이 되어버릴것 같은 건초 더미들(Hay Rolls)..

반쯤 눈이 덮힌 모습이 오히려 정겹고 따스하게 느껴지는 군요..

한때 농장에서 요긴하게 쓰였을듯한 한채의 집..
이제는 지붕이 파도처럼 넘실거릴 정도가 되었습니다.

하지만 언젠가는 찾아올 주인을 기다리며
자신이 서 있어야할 바로 그 자리에 오늘도 서 있습니다.

Right after our arrival at the dock the sky was getting dark all of a sudden.

With a good feeling of complete satisfaction for the journey and safe return,

I was laying down on the wooden deck which was warm enough under the sun in the day time.

As the sky getting darker and darker,

I spotted a peregrine falcon gliding with graveness and elegance..

As I kept watching him to fly I started getting drops of rain more and more.

And it started pouring..

What a scene..!

It was a grand finale cared by generous Mother Nature.

And it seemed like She was saying.. good-bye and see you soon, guys.. :p

woke up at 3:00 am.. left for Algonquin Park at 4:00am from Toronto,
and reaching at Canoe Lake for canoe trail at about 7:30am ..

temperature in Toronto was 28C
and it turned sharply down to 17C in Muskoka highland area
but it went up to almost 35C in the afternoon in the lake while canoeing under the full sunlight.

what a grand day out~~ :p

Thomas drove his huge Yukon all the way up to here.
